Superyacht Marina in the Whitsunday Islands

Superyacht Marina in the Whitsunday Islands

We've all got a slightly different offering, but it's all, you know, it's a really good, it's a good quality offering, and we've got everything that the yachts need. This is the Ben Taylor Podcast, the home of marine industry insights. Enjoy. Hi, everybody. Welcome back to the Ben Taylor Podcast. This is part of a series designed to profile the Australian yachting industry. And so we're sitting down with Jocelyn O'Keefe. Nice to see you, Jocelyn. Hello there. Can I have a hug? There we go. Oh, you're joking. Yeah. What are you about? What's your thing? Tell us a little bit about Coral Sea Marina. Okay, so we're a marina based up in the Whitsundays on the Great Barrier Reef, super yacht marina. We've got 520 berths, and can accommodate yachts up to 80 meters. A whole range of onshore services, two marina villages, a hotel. So everything a yacht needs when they're in the region. Yeah, and could you set the scene a little bit? Because these types of facilities aren't that common. No, they're absolutely not. In Australia. So it's definitely one of the largest marinas in Australia. And I think the magic of it is it's in the Whitsunday Islands, which is one of Australia's cruising grounds, basically. I hear great things. Yeah, have you ever been? I hope to at some point, but I've never been. You're more than welcome anytime. I've kept on hearing all through this event about- So the magic of the Whitsundays is, not only is it tropical islands, 74 tropical islands, but the Great Barrier Reef, the fringing reef surrounds the islands, and then you've got the outer reef further out than that. So the yachts can go and travel as far or as near as they want to. They can go out to the outer reef or they can spend more time around the islands doing sort of more island-based activities. And then what does a typical visit look like? Is this a home port for many of the boats? Are they often traveling through? What's typical? Yeah, often traveling through. So when they're spending time in Australia and the South Pacific in general, they'll maybe do a couple of weeks charter when they're in the Whitsundays. We do have vessels that stay longer, but it is really sort of a cruising destination. So people are coming there for a specific reason generally to charter. Right, okay. And what are you hoping kind of happens over the next few years? What are you guys working on to make sure you kind of hold this really nice position in the Whitsundays? So I think just for us as a whole, as a marina, for the industry, for the region, just seeing more of the international vessels visiting us. Like we really want to promote that region to international yachts coming from wherever in the world. I think the magic of the industry here in Australia is we all work really closely together to keep the yachts in region when they're here and provide them with an amazing service and an amazing experience. Yeah, so for the internationally owned boats to experience that, experience the South Pacific, the Whitsundays, like it's a great cruising area with now good facilities, good support, and like the Coral Sea Marina is one of those. Absolutely, yeah. And I think, you know, if a yacht's coming to Queensland, they're going to spend time in Cairns, they're going to come down to the Whitsundays, they're going to come down to the Gold Coast and Brisbane, and we've all got a slightly different offering, but it's all, you know, it's a really good, it's a good quality offering and we've got everything that the yachts need. Okay, super. Thank you so much for your insights. Thanks, Ben, thanks for your time. Thank you, Jocelyn, love to see you. Thanks.
